As the Covid-19 pandemic gathered speed earlier this year, Borealis and several industry partners moved just as quickly to address shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) at French hospitals. A loose network of value chain partners came together in the outreach project “Les Visières de l’Espoir,” or literally, “visors of hope.”
For the duration of the co-operation, Borealis provided free of charge sufficient quantities of its Bormed™ RJ880MO grade for use in the headband component of face shields. With around 1,200 face shields produced per day, the project was ultimately able to distribute nearly 50,000 pieces to hospital personnel in France, thus playing an important role in keeping frontline workers safe during the pandemic.
“’Visors of hope’ has made an important contribution to ensuring the health and safety of medical personnel in France,” says Lucrèce Foufopoulos, Borealis Executive Vice President Polyolefins, Innovation and Circular Economy Solutions. “We are proud to have been able to join this extremely efficient network. I can’t think of a better illustration than this nimble collaborative effort of our Bormed™ motto, ‘Because we care’.”
Bormed RJ880MO is a relatively new addition to the dedicated Bormed grade portfolio of Bormed polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) grades developed for use in rigid and flexible products in the healthcare industry. Thanks to the breadth and quality of the Bormed range, our customers can fulfil the most stringent regulatory and technical requirements in the manufacture of medical devices and pharmaceutical and diagnostic packaging.
As a specially modified, highly transparent grade, Bormed RJ880MO has a very high melt flow rate, making it ideal for high-speed injection moulding. It contains a nucleating agent and demoulding additives to provide good antistatic and demoulding properties. Using Bormed RJ880MO results in products with excellent transparency, good organoleptic properties, and good balance of stiffness and impact strength at ambient temperatures. Developed for use in healthcare applications such as pipette tips, diagnostic tubes and other consumables, the grade is also suitable for the manufacture of packaging formats like lids, closures, square containers and boxes.
